After the war General Roddey moved his family to Tuskaloosa and he went to New York, where he entered the commission business as a member of the firm of Roddey Bell & Co. After spending ten years in New York he removed to London, which place has since been his headquarters. Having been prepared in the primary schools, he entered the freshman class in the University of Alabama in 1838, where he graduated in 1841, with the highest distinction a result reflecting credit alike upon the sagacity and kindness of the benefactor and the talents and energy of the beneficiary. Surviving are one daughter Miss Lola Englebert, Cottondale; two sons, W. N. Englebert, Cottondale; and W. N. Englebert, Tuscaloosa, two brothers, Murk A. Chism, Tuscaloosa; and W. H. Chism, Birmingham; two sisters Mrs. E. G. Stanton, Birmingham; and Mrs. S. T. Vinson, Gadsden; seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Colonel Hargroves was an exemplary Christian being a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and a living example of trust, sobriety and Christian manhood and leaves behind him a pure and unsullied record that has not spot or blemish upon it. Night set in and he had not returned, and the family began to feel some uneasiness. The accident occurred in the family bed room of Mr. SLOANS residence, about three miles of this place. He immediately applied himself to the study of law; and being qualified and admitted a member of the bar, about twelve months afterwards he established an office in Tuscaloosa for the purpose of practicing his profession. He was thus engaged when the war broke out and he at once raised a company of mounted men and entered the services as its captain.
