William Mann Jr. first arrived in Bellefonte in 1823, and together with his brother Harvey built an axe factory at Boiling Spring on Spring Creek's Logan Branch. In the Middle Ages, European miners used this ax to extract metallic ores from the ground. Axes have been in use for thousands of years, and the earliest known example was found in Western Asian countries dating back to the Bronze Age.
